Presenting ... Dronescape 035 (waag_drs035) by Cousin Silas



As we move into 2017 I would like to give you a taste of things to come from weareallghosts … coming up over the next few days we’ll have a remix album from Cousin Silas, an expressive release from Matthew VandenBrook, a retrospective of the musician Chris Newman aka Delicate Apparatus, and a rereleased album from Coloured Lines. We also have this, the 35th dronescape from Cousin Silas.

Cousin Silas has promised 50 dronescapes and 2017 will see us get closer to that goal … a bittersweet goal, if truth be told, because I love his longform work and am proud to provide a home for the dronescape series.

As for the 35th dronescape, it is an utter delight … words do not do its 75 minutes justice … so I’m going to stop and ask you to have a listen. Today is New Year’s Eve (or Hogmanay in Scotland) and it is a busy time. This dronescape provides respite from this busyness … it gives you, the listener, some well earned time out. Take it and make of it what you will, what you need, and may your 2017 be awesome.

Presenting ... Rex Gentium (waag_aa003) by Scott Lawlor ... Ambient Advent 2016



Over the last couple of years we’ve feature a series of ambient pieces inspired by and intended for the period of Advent … four pieces for the four Sundays in the month or so before Christmas. This year it was Scott Lawyer’s turn but, due to work and other externalities outwith my control, I was unable to upload before now.

Scott’s four pieces were recorded live when he played them, just over a year ago, on stillstream.fm. They are quietly meditative longform pieces that infuse the listener with the most delightful of fragrances, nothing overpowering, just an engaging and, dare I say, entertaining experience that can be instilled with a spiritual significance, like a gentle incense, if that’s your thing.

Waiting is not the strong suit of many of us in our hurry-up culture. Everything is urgent. Hope is foreign to people who expect quick relief, cures, and solutions. We struggle to guard Advent jealously because popular culture short-circuits this season of hope: We are tempted to go directly to celebrating Christmas without getting in touch with the part of ourselves that is longing, hoping, and trusting.

The following pieces, written and performed last year on stillstream.fm, are intended to help with your wait, help you take your foot off the accelerator and just be. Christmas Day will come, just don’t let it come too quickly.

Presenting ... The Three Imposters (waag_rel093) by Cousin Silas | Tim Jones | Kevin Lyons





Arthur Machen, the Welsh author of the 1890s and early 20th century, is best known for his influential supernatural, fantasy and horror fiction. Machen’s most famous work - The Great God Pan - is new to me but is the source of inspiration for Cousin Silas, Tim Jones & Kevin Lyons along with the series of short stories that their latest album is named after, The Three Imposters.

According to Wikipedia, The Three Imposters incorporates several inset weird tales and culminates in a final denouement of deadly horror, connected with a secret society devoted to debauched pagan rites. The three impostors of the title are members of this society who weave a web of deception in the streets of London —relating the aforementioned weird tales in the process—as they search for a missing Roman coin.

It is a book that I yet to read but I am inspired to do so because of it’s impact on Silas, Jones & Lyons; who have taken this impact and created the most wondrous of experimental ambient music. Starting and finishing with a refrain played on a hurdy-gurdy - a sound that sends chills down my spine each and every time I hear it - The Three Imposters is as deliciously dark as the richest of chocolate, as engaging and almost as fattening.

The music featured on The Three Imposters was created during a week together earlier this year. I had the privilege of joining the trio for an overnight. The closest they got to debauchery - while I was there - was watching old horror films (one of which provided the hurdy-gurdy refrain), drinking too much coffee and eating pizza. Whilst I cannot vouch for what happened when I wasn’t there, I’m glad they were inspired by Machen in such a way as to create such a delightful selection of electronic ambience.

Presenting ... Spiralling Continuum (waag_rel092) by Warren Daly




A luminous concept, warmer than my previous ambient compositions, I wish to evoke a sense of space travel, transcendental meditation, and spatial imagery.

I was heavily influenced by these fine releases:
- William Basinski - The Disintegration Loops
- Miles Davis - In A Silent Way
- Ebauche - Adrift
- Pink Floyd - BBC Archives 1974 (Dark Side of The Moon live SBD)

Presenting ... Dronescape 034 (waag_drs034) by Cousin Silas




Cousin Silas’ 34th dronescape is another exceptional longform ambient soundscape. At 1 second under 73 minutes, it is an epic piece of ambience … one the draws you in and encourages to take a trip of profound personal discovery. Where it will take you, I don’t know … but it takes me to a place where I am truly present, providing me with focus for the here and now, helping me find my flow.

Dronescape 034 drowns out the distractions of a very busy, demanding world … and let’s me just be in the moment, whether it is as an accompaniment for a book or as a background to work; it also works very well on its own as a focal piece or as an aide to relaxation, softly lulling me to a restful state.

I can’t get enough of this and the other dronescapes in Cousin Silas’ body of work here at weareallghosts … and I commend 34 to you, it really is something beautiful indeed.

Presenting ... "Berlin Evenings (waag_CDr004)" by Cousin Silas




The only thing you can be sure of when you dive into a Cousin Silas release is that you won't always know what to expect. Over the course of fifteen years and close to 100 releases Silas has established himself as the master of modern ambient music. Each album has a flavour and sound all its own and now here he is with his first album length exploration of the "Berlin school" of electronic music. He's dabbled before of course on tracks here and there, but here he dives head first into this most enduring and beloved form of electronica with a stunning collection of pieces built around the characteristic pulsating sequencers, lush Mellotron-inspired pads, authentically retro-sounding leads and of course flashes of that familiar Silas guitar.

What impresses the most here - as it does with all Silas releases - is the breadth of the material on offer. One might expect that, having chosen to focus on one sub-set of electronic music, Silas would have restricted his sonic palette, narrowed his vision, but not a bit of it. This is no slavish pastiche, no simple wallow in nostalgia. This is, as ever with the music of Cousin Silas, vital, uplifting and inspiring music that offers endless rewards with each subsequent play.

Presenting ... "Dronescape 033 (waag_drs033)" by Cousin Silas



It has been a wee while since we had a dronescape from Cousin Silas, partly because he’s been so busy releasing collaborations and albums on other netlabels.

I’ve spoken before about my excitement when I get a dropbox link sent to me … I guess I’m as big a fan as anyone of Dave’s work and still get the feels when I hear a new dronescape from him.

Dronescape 033 is an absolute delight: it is the kind of music you want to hear of an lazy Sunday afternoon or a warm bubblebath, music that lets you switch off and drift away to wherever it is you drift off to. It is wonderfully unhurried, deep and engaging, you cannot fail to relax when this is on. It certainly works for me.

Presenting ... Hope (waag_rel091) by Colin Blake



Back in June 2015, Colin Blake released Faith on weareallghosts (waag_rel072) … it was intended to be the first in a three-part series that follows Colin’s original C60 idea - to create 30 minute slices of sci-fi ambient, slices that could easily fit on the side of a C60 cassette tape. Faith was presented as two “sides”: part 1 and part 2, both running near to 30 minutes each and featuring some delightfully mysterious ambient music.

Unfortunately, Hope got sidelined … too many other releases got in the way. WAAG was (and is) a victim of its own success. Hope should have been out sooner and for that, I am sorry.

Just like Faith, Hope is presented as two “sides”: part 1 and part 2, both running near to 30 minutes each. These sides feature feature more of Blake’s signature ambient music … the mysterious, engaging, inspiring kind; I hope (pardon the pun) to feature Charity soon … and look forward to having all three in one playlist.

Here’s what Colin said about Hope at the time he sent the files over:

“Side 1 is called “Hope for Humanity (hope-LESS to hope-FULL)”. The track is in 6 parts: 
1) hopeless - what I tried to do was convey when a personal situation starts to become hopeless. 
2) the despair reached at the bottom of a hopeless situation then, near the end of 2nd part, the first feelings of hope … this is followed by ...
3) a short arp sequence as these feelings become true. 
4) the main piano based section … when hope becomes reality ... the middle part a lapse, then the paino reaffirms hope. 
5) like a ancient ocean euphoria, like waves washes over the human. 
6) final short part fades … I left the ending like that to let the listener decide if hope is found or not. 
Side 2 is called "Hope for our World (Earth and Heaven)” … it is made up of two long parts in a kind of call and response: 
1) a call/plea of hope for all living things on the planet. 
2) a response from the heavens … this I have tried to do in a choral piece. 
Side 2 can also be a continuation of side 1 … resolving hope in man."

Presenting ... 2 (waag_rel089) by Cousin Silas, Tim Jones & Kevin Lyons




It is almost exactly a year to the day that 2 - the second album from Cousin Silas, Tim Jones & Kevin Lyons - was recorded ... the accumulation of a week of creative experimentation and collaboration between three old friends. Unfortunately I was unable to attend that particular meeting of minds but was delighted with the album when it arrived in my in-box.

Underpinned by Jones’ samples and loops, 2 is a sonically adventurous and wonderfully imaginative journey into more abstract, experimental electronica … whilst Silas’ ambient guitar is present and Lyons’ attention to detail is apparent … this is something more, something rather mysterious and intriguing.

In many ways, this shouldn’t work … three people with three different, distinct styles … but it does and it does in such a way that you don’t know where the extent of the individual contributions reach. This is a collaboration in it’s truest form and it is a real pleasure to listen to.

The idea of collaboration has negative connotations as does compromise … but something truly beautiful can be born from working together, sharing a vision and journeying on the road of creation with one or two close friends. This is evidenced here, on this the fifth volume of collaborations from Cousin Silas and his friends.

Presenting ... "Micro Dronescapes Vol 1" by Cousin Silas





A number of people have taken Cousin Silas’ Dronescapes series to their heart, myself included. I find them utterly fascinating and eagerly await each instalment like a child on Christmas Eve. This month, rather than release another dronescape in all its longform ambient glory, Cousin Silas has decided to put out 6 shorter pieces that all sit comfortably within the 11 to 13 minute range. These pieces are an utter delight: they are long enough to easily convey their respective ideas but not long enough to become repetitive … they are just right in a way Goldilocks would approve, if longform ambient soundscapes were her thing.

I am uplifted by the music presented, uplifted and refreshed in the way only music can and does. I hope you can connect to the music as I have.

Presenting ... "Awakenings (waag_rel085)" by David Gerard





For Pete Namlook [1960-2012] & Edgar Froese [1944-2015]

In 2012, ambient composer and musician Pete Namlook died of an apparent heart attack. His passing saddened the ambient music world, and Namlook's music will always stand as a testament to his talent. In 2015, we lost another electronic genius, tangerine dream founder Edgar Froese. I had first come to know Froese through MySpace, and I would send him links to whatever I was working on. Of course, Edgar was supportive of my work, especially my paean to him entitled, “scattered frequencies”, but he hardly saw me as a fledgling musician: “considering how long you have dedicated yourself to your art, I would consider you among my peers. You have developed your own style, and while I am flattered to hear that I have influenced your work, I admire what you have created ... it is uniquely yours.” So I was doubly saddened by his passing – I had really connected with a kindred spirit, and it seemed just as our friendship was growing, he was taken from not only me, but the many ambient artists who were inspired by his group and solo recordings.
Though I never got to converse with Namlook, whenever I listen to his music I get that strange sense of déjà-vu, much like what happened when I reached out to David Borden and Steve Drews of Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Co. They both told me how my music hearkened to their halcyon days working with the inimitable Bob Moog in his studio/factory in Trumansburg, NY. It is an honour and a privilege to get such affirmation from the true pioneers in the electronic milieu. And yet, I had already mastered 2015's “homage” so it didn't seem fitting to just squeeze in some pieces dedicated to both men – besides, what I really wanted to do was less of a homage and more of an album in the classic tradition of electronic recordings, and dedicate the album to them in memoriam. And so that is what I set out to do: a gapless album to realize what those albums would have sounded like in their entirety, without the disadvantage of having to flip an LP or cassette over. I also make the album conform to what albums of that nature generally ran: so, no 60-80 minute extravaganzas – a 47-minute and some change aural odyssey through the universe of my mind. In much the same way previous releases “Bremsstrahlung” and “Music From The Pillars Of The Saints” were, this album ebbs and flows with a quality that is sometimes trancelike, and sometimes outerworldly. In fact, if you play this album in repeat mode, you will find that surprisingly everything comes full-circle as well as being cyclical in nature.
In my heart, I know their spirits are listening. And I can hear them doing so.

I was intrigued when David Gerard approached me at the start of 2016 with “Awakenings”, pitching it, as he has as a tribute to both Pete Namlook & Edgar Froese. When I received the raw file and listened to it, I was inspired … and a wee bit overwhelmed, if truth be told … it is an exceptional album and a fitting tribute to two giants of electronic music.

Awakenings is electronic music at it’s very best: expressive and utterly beguiling. I really hope you like it as much as I do!

In conversation with David Gerard: Thoughts on “Awakenings"



I have been working with David Gerard on his upcoming WAAG release ... Awakenings ... for a wee while now and it felt fitting to provide you with some background in the run up to release.

TM: I understand you consider Awakenings a conceptual album, in the vein of some of the most notable releases in your catalogue. How so?

DG: Well Thomas, I tend to operate on two planes when I am inspired to write an album. Sometimes, it's a compilation of tunes in a similar vibe, or that collectively, sound good together. Most of the time however, they are “conceptual” in the sense that I feel the album tells a larger story, and the individual tracks are pieces of a puzzle, as it were. Rubaiyat, The Dream Chamber and Pillars Of The Saints for example, were each conceptualized. With Awakenings I wanted to tell the story of a space mission, from liftoff to reentry.

TM: Would you classify this as “space music” then?

DG: A Conspiracy Of Planets would certainly qualify as space music – and The Dream Chamber was based on a short story I wrote, which has sort of a sci- vibe to it. I'd say Awakenings is more simpatico with those conceptual electronic music albums I grew up on and loved, from folks like Jean Michel Jarre and Tangerine Dream.

TM: You dedicated the album to TD frontman Edgar Froese, who passed away last year, and to Pete Namlook, who passed in 2012...

DG: Yeah. I had discovered Pete's work around 2005 or so, when I was just starting out in terms of a making genuine commitment to my music. His sudden death came as a big shock to me, and he was only 51 years old. As someone who has danced on the precipice of mortality, it reminded me of how important one's legacy is to leave behind. Luckily for us, we have the gift of his music.



TM: And of course, you've cited Tangerine Dream as an influence countless times...

DG: Let's face it – they were the preeminent electronic ensemble of the 70's, and certainly as much an influence on my work as minimalist composers like John Cage and Steve Reich. Edgar and I really connected in 2010: he had heard my piece, “Scattered Frequencies” (which I dedicated to him), said how much he liked it, as well as my 2007 album, "Moog Opus No.1". It was great not only to have his friendship, but we had engaging conversations about how we both approach compositions, in spite of us knowing little of each other's native tongue.

I wouldn't go so far as to declare myself standing on the shoulders of giants like him, but I think this album pays tribute to them both through the music and the styles. I never realized how much my work had in common with Pete's until I starting combing through his back catalogue. It was just like the shock I felt to discover my early albums hearkened to Mother Mallard, though I'd not yet heard of them or their music.

TM: Speaking of which, the album art for Awakenings reminds me of one of Froese's earlier recordings.

DG: Another weird coincidence: I was playing around with different ideas for the artwork. I posted a mock up on my Facebook page, when musician Christian Fiesel and others came forward to say it was reminiscent of Froese's second solo disc: "Epsilon In Malaysian Pale". I googled the album art for it, and I was like, “cue the Twilight Zone music, - dada, da, da....." That makes the dedicatory nature of Awakenings even more fitting.

Presenting ... Dronescape 032 by Cousin Silas





Cousin Silas’ thirty-second dronescape is dedicated to the memory of Dame Zaha Hadid, the exceptional British architect who died recently. According to Wikipedia, Hadid liberated architectural geometry with the creation of highly expressive, sweeping fluid forms of multiple perspective points and fragmented geometry that evoke the chaos and flux of modern life.

I marvel at Hadid’s creations, especially the Riverside Museum in Glasgow (pictured on the album cover) … she was a true visionary.

Dronescape 032 encapsulates the same kind of vision, for me … expressive, fluid sound with sweeping elegant movement … a piece that presents multiple perspective points to aid access.

I was deeply intrigued when Scott first pitched his idea for an Easter-themed album earlier in the year … especially considering the darker subject and proposed sound … I was not disappointed. This album is a melancholic delight … one that is perfect for the dark day between Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

This is my interpretation of the legend that Jesus descended into hell during his burial after the crucifixion. This album is a much darker sequel to last year's "Seven Last Words" which was a more meditative approach to the pronouncements made from the cross during the crucifixion itself.
